Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
