A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
